High Testosterone Levels Reduce Risk of All Cause Mortality by 30% Study Shows

Higher testosterone levels in men reduce their risk of dying from all causes by 25-30% according to a study the journal Circulation (2007;116:2694-2701). They concluded “In men, endogenous testosterone concentrations are inversely related to mortality due to all causes, cardiovascular causes and cancer, with a 25%-30% lower risk in total mortality in the highest compared with the lowest quartile of testosterone level.”

The benefits of testosterone are the following:

  • Improving HDL Cholesterol

  • Lowering triglycerides

  • Improving body mass index (decrease fat, increase in muscle)

  • Reduced risk of diabetes

  • Lower LDL

  • Lower total cholesterol

  • Reduced risk of death

The “normal” range of testosterone in men is from 295-1197. What this study showed is that if your testosterone was in the 1000-1200 (top 25% of normal) range your risks of dying of all causes was 25-30% lower than men with testosterone in the 300-525 (bottom 25%) range.

That is very significant and begs the question: Why are men who have testosterone levels less than 1000 not being started on testosterone to get to the top 25% of normal range. The medical literature time and time again shows how testosterone not only makes men feel better (more energy, stronger, increased libido, firmer erections etc) but also protects them against dying from cardiovascular disease.

Just today I had a 38 year old man who came in for something completed unrelated to testosterone but brought in his last set of blood work. When I checked his testosterone level it was 345 (range 295-1197). I went on to ask him if he had symptoms of testosterone deficiency and he said yes to the majority of them. His primary care doctor told him his testosterone levels were normal and he left the office with the same symptoms he walked in with. This is a perfect example of someone who needs testosterone. He has a decline in libido, was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, has declining energy levels and also has injured joints from Brazilian jui jitsu. There is no reason not to start this guy on testosterone to get his levels to 1000-1200. He will feel better, recover faster, get leaner and stronger and his sex life should improve greatly.
