Bone Density Testing

DEXA.jpeg

We use non-invasive DEXA technology to determine your bone fracture risk and identify and monitor any bone loss as seen in osteoporosis or osteopenia. This is a non-invasive test that measures the mineral levels in your bones such as calcium, to determine the strength and thickness, also known as your bone density or bone mass.

Though we may not be able to ‘feel’ what’s happening inside our bones, the microscopic framework of collagen and minerals is constantly undergoing a process called bone remodeling in which mature bone tissue is removed, called bone resorption, and new bone tissue formation occurs, called ossification, to support strong bone density.

This process thins with age, remaining robust until age 25, then becomes stable from 25 to 50. After age 50, particularly around menopause for females, bone resorption begins declining and accelerates, resulting in increased fracture risk. Other factors contributing to low bone density are lack of exercise and a low calcium and vitamin D intake, among other reasons.

WHAT IS DEXA?

As you may infer, monitoring bone density may be a preventative measure aiding your bone health. At the Breen Center for Optimal Health, we believe in a preventative approach to health; that’s why we’ve included the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan in our repertoire of devices. It measures bone mineral density and assesses the risk of bone fractures, often used to help diagnose or assess the risk of developing bone-related conditions such as osteoporosis or osteopenia.

The risk for these conditions is higher in women as female bones tend to be smaller and less dense than male bones, although we find men in our practice with osteopenia more often than you’d think. All our patients coming in for physicals receive a DEXA Scan, and annually thereafter, to monitor bone health. It’s amazing how many patients are able to reverse osteopenia and even osteoporosis (which can take up to 5 years but is possible).

This is a non-invasive scan that requires no preparation. Depending on what area of the body is being tested, you may expect to wear a gown for the scan, as clothing with metal fasteners must be removed.
